Liposuction and liposculpture

The distribution of the body fat varies between individuals, ages and races. For most people this distribution and deposits of fat doesn't conform the so called "aesthetic standards" which in turn varies with time, culture and fashion. Diet and exercise are undoubtedly the best ways to get rid of weight and excess body fat. However, some areas of the body fat proves to be stubborn and refuses to shift. Liposculpturing and liposuction helps in getting rid of these areas and achieve the best possible body shape.

What is Liposculpturing?

Liposculpturing is a fine type of liposuction that aims to get rid of specific areas of fat deposits in the body to achieve a sculptured aesthetically pleasing shape of the body. It involves:

  • Injecting the areas treated with a physiological fluid to loosen the fat and reduce the pain and bruising after surgery (Tumescent technique).
  • Using fine liposuction cannulas connected to power assisted liposuction machine (Lipomatic) to aspirate the fat through small skin incisions.

Is Liposculpturing Right for Me?

Liposculpturing is an excellent way to get rid of specific areas of external body fat. It aims to fine-tune the shape of your body.

The ideal BMI (Body Mass Index) for these procedures is around 25.

I do not recommend liposuction as a weight reducing procedure as it will not get rid of the internal fat (visceral fat). If your BMI is 30 or higher, the majority of the fat is internally seated or diffused all over your body.

Some patients find  liposuction a motivation to exercise and lose more weight after surgery.

If you are concerned about some aesthetic and physical shape of your body and considering liposuction or liposculpturing book a consultation to have an expert and honest opinion.

What Will Happen During the Consultation?

I will take a detailed history to explore your concerns and requirements.

I will examine the areas of your body you are concerned about and estimate the amounts of external fat deposits. I will measure your current and ideal body mass index (BMI).

I will then discuss the suitability of surgery with you, the expected outcome, and any alternative options.

If you are a good candidate for surgery, I will explain the procedure in detail, the recovery process, and any possible risks or complications.

What Happens on the Day of Surgery?

Most of my procedures are carried out as day case surgeries. This means you’re able to go home the same day.

I will see you before the surgery to draw some markings on your skin. The anaesthetist will see you and begin the anaesthetic.

During surgery, you’ll be given a dose of antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection. I will infiltrate the areas to be treated with plenty of local anaesthetic to numb the skin and deep tissue.

When you wake up, you may feel some tightness. However, you should not feel significant pain thanks to the local anaesthetics.

You will be provided with strong painkillers to take home, which should control all pain and discomfort.

What is the Recovery Process?

You will experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first few days. The pain will be controlled by taking the painkillers on a regular basis. It typically takes one week to return to day-to-day activities. It may take up to three weeks to return to full physical activities. You should wear a well-fitted pressure garment for six weeks after surgery.

What Follow-up Will I Receive?

I will see you one week after surgery to check the wounds. 6-8 weeks later to check the condition of the scars and teach you lymph-draining massages. After 6 months, I will check the final shape and outcome.

Are There Any Alternatives?

That would depend on your aims and expectations, which are better measured during the consultation. For example, weight loss by diet and exercise is more effective in getting rid of the generalised and visceral fat. If you have sagging or overhang skin excess, liposuction alone will not get rid or tighten the skin and other procedures to tighten the skin such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift, or arm lift, might be required.
